Planning Application Support
We combine technical acoustic assessment, heritage-sensitive design, and specialist planning support to help you achieve the internal noise reduction you need, while respecting the planning constraints of your property.
When planning permission or consent may be required
Whether you need permission for acoustic windows depends on several factors, including your property’s age, status, and local regulations.
Generally, permitted development rights may allow for window replacements if they match the existing style, but these rights are often restricted in conservation areas, for listed buildings, or where an Article 4 Direction is in place. We recommend verifying your specific planning status before proceeding, as incorrect installation can lead to enforcement action.
How we choose the most appropriate route
Before preparing any application, we assess your property to determine the most effective acoustic solution that balances your noise reduction needs with local planning requirements:
High-performance secondary glazing
We often consider this first where original or historically significant windows must be retained, or where changing the external appearance would create unnecessary planning risk.
Like-for-like acoustic timber replacement
This may be suitable where existing windows are modern, heavily altered, beyond reasonable repair, or make little contribution to the building’s character.
A combined approach
Some properties benefit from replacement windows on less sensitive elevations and secondary glazing behind original windows on the principal elevation.
What Our Planning Application Support Includes
We manage the information required to keep the planning process clear and aligned with local authority standards.
Assessment and acoustic strategy
- Initial review of your property, window types, and existing noise issues.
- Review of conservation area status, listed building considerations, or Article 4 restrictions.
- Analysis of the noise source and target internal acoustic performance.
- Recommendation of the most appropriate acoustic route—whether replacement, secondary glazing, or a hybrid solution.
- Review of relevant Conservation Area Appraisals to inform the design approach.
Application preparation and management
- Preparation of existing and proposed window drawings.
- Detailed window schedules and product specifications.
- Photographs and supporting design documentation.
- Heritage and acoustic justification statements.
- Design and Access Statements where required by the council.
- Submission of the application on your behalf.
- Proactive communication with the planning or conservation officer.
- Reasonable amendments following feedback from the planning authority.
Why planning and acoustic performance must be considered together
Standard planning advice can tell you whether permission is needed, but it does not always answer the acoustic question. We approach every project by looking at the practical reality of how the home will be used:
The noise source
We consider the specific frequency characteristics of the noise you are facing.
Window and frame design
Where permitted development rights may have been restricted, and window changes may require a formal application.
Heritage appearance
We carefully match mouldings, sightlines, and finishes to meet conservation standards.
Ventilation requirements
We factor in how the room is ventilated and occupied, ensuring the solution is practical for day-to-day use.
Possible flanking paths
We identify where sound may bypass the windows, such as through walls or roofs.
The likely planning route
We identify the consent path that balances your acoustic goals with the local authority’s requirements.
The practical outcome
Our focus is on the actual noise levels you experience inside your living rooms and bedrooms.
Case study: Navigating planning constraints
Case study: Navigating planning constraints
Prince Albert Road, NW1
Project context:A Victorian house situated near Regent’s Park requiring significant noise reduction from heavy road traffic on Prince Albert Road.
Constraint: The property’s original single-glazed timber sash windows were a defining feature of the street elevation and had to be retained.
Acoustic route: We recommended bespoke inward-opening timber secondary windows. This approach allowed the original heritage sash windows to remain undisturbed, fully satisfying conservation requirements while enabling the installation of 49 dB acoustic laminate glazing.
Outcome: The project successfully balanced conservation standards with high-performance acoustics. The original external character was preserved, planning consent requirements were met, and internal noise was significantly reduced (LAeq reduced by 12.3dB; LAFmax reduced by 20.5dB).

PLANNING PERMISSION FOR ACOUSTIC WINDOWS FAQs
-
Do I need planning permission for acoustic windows?
Planning permission is not required simply because a window provides acoustic insulation. Whether permission is needed depends on the property, its location and whether the proposed windows alter its external appearance. Additional restrictions may apply to listed buildings, flats, properties in conservation areas and those covered by an Article 4 Direction. You should confirm the requirements with your local planning authority or a planning adviser. Once permission is known to be required, we can manage the window-related application for you.
-
Can acoustic windows be installed in a conservation area?
Yes, provided the proposed design responds appropriately to the property and its surroundings. Conservation officers may consider details such as the window material, proportions, glazing pattern, opening style, profiles, sightlines, colour and finish. Depending on the building, replacement timber acoustic windows or internally installed secondary glazing may be the most appropriate solution.
-
Can you manage the planning application for me?
Yes. Where planning permission is required, we can prepare the window-related drawings, specifications and supporting information, submit the application through the Planning Portal and act as your agent for routine council correspondence. We are not a general planning consultancy and do not provide a formal determination of whether permission is required.
-
Is secondary glazing easier to approve than replacement windows?
Secondary glazing may be more suitable for listed buildings and other heritage-sensitive properties because it is installed internally and allows the existing external windows to remain in place. However, it is not automatically exempt from approval, and Listed Building Consent may still be required. Each property and proposal must be assessed individually.
-
What documents may be required for the application?
Requirements vary between local authorities and projects. A window-related application may include existing and proposed drawings, elevation and section details, technical specifications, material and finish information, glazing patterns, sightlines and supporting heritage information. We prepare the documents agreed as part of the application service.
-
Can acoustic windows match original sash windows?
Yes. Bespoke timber acoustic sash windows can be designed to respect the proportions and appearance of traditional windows, including their glazing-bar layout, frame profiles, meeting rails, opening style, colour and finish. The aim is to combine an appropriate heritage-led appearance with improved acoustic performance.
-
Can you help with properties affected by an Article 4 Direction?
Yes. An Article 4 Direction can remove specified permitted development rights, meaning that window alterations which might ordinarily be permitted could require planning permission. Once the requirement has been confirmed, we can prepare and submit the window-related application with the relevant design and specification information.
-
Do you guarantee planning approval?
No company can guarantee planning approval because the final decision rests with the local planning authority. We prepare a clear, well-supported application based on the proposed window design, technical specification and relevant heritage considerations. If the council raises routine questions about the windows, we can respond as your agent.
