Environmental Noise Consultation Responses

Major infrastructure projects are often assessed through external noise modelling, policy thresholds and strategic mitigation measures. Those are important, but they do not always describe how noise is experienced inside real homes.

The Soundproof Windows contributes technical responses to selected public consultations where transport noise, residential facade performance, ventilation, overheating and existing housing stock are directly relevant to the assessment of internal living conditions.

Our focus is the building-level reality: how homes perform in practice, how residents occupy them, and where standard assumptions around facades, closed windows or averaged noise levels may need closer examination.

Consultation Cards

East West Rail Consultation 2026

Project type: Rail infrastructure / DCO consultation

Status: Submitted, awaiting consultation report

Focus: Approved Document O, internal noise conditions, ventilation, older housing stock. We responded to Question 17, focusing on assessed internal noise conditions under realistic ventilation and occupancy scenarios.

London City Airport RNP AR Approaches

Project type: Airport / airspace change consultation

Status: Closed

Focus: Aircraft noise, maximum noise events, sleep disturbance, ventilation, facade performance
We submitted observations on how aircraft noise is experienced inside homes, particularly where external noise metrics do not fully describe internal residential conditions.

Our Technical Focus

Internal residential conditions

Noise is ultimately experienced inside bedrooms, living rooms and workspaces. External modelling is essential, but internal conditions determine practical residential impact.

Ventilation and overheating

Closed-window assumptions may not reflect realistic occupancy during warmer periods, particularly where Approved Document O and overheating risk are relevant.

Existing housing stock

Older, Victorian, Edwardian and heritage-sensitive properties often behave differently from standardised facade assumptions because of airtightness, ventilation and retrofit constraints.

Intermittent and maximum events

For transport noise, average levels are not always the full story. Pass-by events, aircraft overflights and quieter night-time conditions can require a more practical building-level view.
