49DB SOUNDPROOF ULTRA SECONDARY WINDOWS INSTALLATION
Welcome to our Bow Quarter Case Study. Join us as we take you on a journey through the assessment, planning, and implementation of our tailored soundproofing solutions, which have brought tranquility and improved quality of life to the residents.
THE CUSTOMER
Situated within the Grade II listed Bow Quarter development, the apartment retained its original single-glazed Crittall windows, together with an older standard secondary glazing system. The original Crittall windows alone were estimated to provide approximately 12–15 dB of sound reduction.
However, the existing arrangement was not adequately controlling noise from the Overground, mainline and Docklands Light Railway services running behind the former match factory. Railway noise was being transmitted throughout the apartment, significantly affecting the comfort and usability of the space.
OUR SOLUTION
The existing openings were more than four metres high and incorporated curved heads, requiring a fully bespoke design. Their scale and geometry meant that our standard secondary-window opening arrangement could not be used.
Instead, we designed and installed bespoke 49dB-rated Soundproof Ultra secondary windows, positioned approximately 95 mm glass-to-glass from the original Crittall glazing.
The new system combined an Rw 49 dB-rated, 39 mm-thick acoustic double-glazed unit, continuous dual compression seals and a multipoint locking mechanism. It was specifically configured to provide high acoustic performance within the restricted cavity while accommodating the unusual height and curved profile of the listed windows.
THE RESULTS
The maximum internal noise level recorded after installation was 42.9 dB, compared with 67.0 dB beforehand; a substantial reduction of 24.1 dB. The average sound level fell from 49.2 dB to 32.2 dB, representing a measured improvement of 17.0 dB.
Together, these results demonstrate a significant reduction in both the general background noise and the impact of individual train pass-bys, making the apartment noticeably quieter and more comfortable.
In addition to its acoustic performance, the 39 mm double-glazed unit provided improved solar control. Its g-value of 0.57 means that approximately 57% of incident solar energy passes into the room, while the remaining proportion is reflected or absorbed by the glazing. A shading coefficient of 0.66 further indicates reduced solar heat gain compared with standard clear glazing. The specification also provides 0% stated UV transmittance, helping to protect internal finishes and furnishings from ultraviolet exposure.

HOLLY SAYS:
“A fantastic company providing a great product. We have had a really positive experience using the soundproof window company. The windows fit perfectly, look beautiful and block out the noise from the busy train lines that run underneath our windows. The customer care is exceptional and the quality of the product is excellent. I would highly recommend this company.”

IN-SITU TESTING METHODOLOGY
Before-and-after sound-level measurements were taken in the same room, with the microphone positioned in the same location and at the same height for each test. Measurements were carried out using an NTi Audio XL2 acoustic analyser, field-calibrated immediately before each measurement period.
Each measurement period lasted approximately 15 minutes and captured around 20–25 representative train pass-bys. The same room conditions and instrument settings were maintained to provide a consistent comparison of internal railway noise before and after installation.
As individual railway pass-bys naturally vary, these results represent comparative in-situ measurements rather than a controlled laboratory test.
